Nagmamahal Kapamilya

A glimpse of the "Coconuter" story can be caught on ABS-CBN's show Nagmamahal Kapamilya this Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006. I will also post a long article that I have been working on in the next couple of days, followed by a regular "Coconuter" entry and pictures next week.

Here are online copies of the tapings from the Nagmamahal Kapamilya episode.

Just saw your feature in NAGMAMAHAL KAPAMILYA and had been a follower of your blog and

What can I say? WOW!

While most of us only dream of your achievements (based on your resume) its really touching and inspiring for us to know that you gave up almost everything just to follow your heart.

WOW

Just to warn you that after being on tv, you are famous and many will take advantage of that by offering you something.

But I dont worry. You are a survivor now

You will survive.

Man, I think you're nuts, but I admire you, When I watched the show "Nagmamahal Kapamilya", I thought for a second that you're the reincarnation of Buddha. You should make your own religion called "Coconutism". IMO, you should use your coconut. If I had your brain, I bet I'm gonna be so fucking rich in the future.

BTW, you should try to smoke marijuana, it'll enlighten you.

keep it up man.

i've seen the tv feature about your story. i've never read any of your blogs before so my initial reaction about the feature was based mainly on well, the feature itself. At first I thought you're just another crazy guy with too many options and you opted for a life away from comfort, and then when you hit the worst phase of your "nomadic" life, you 'd go back to being the "achiever" that you are (believe me, i've seen your resume, and what can i say, what the hell were you thinking?"). I'm feeling a bit of a bitterness too because unlike you, there are just so many people with limited options, no choices, and will just have to work their way to get through a day. You are one smart, over achieving good looking guy. People will kill to have that. Whereas you, on the other hand, gave that all up to what, live in provincial philippines, taking care of your chickens and what have you.

Which is why, out of curiosity, I came about your blog. Im not done reading it yet, but I think I can now quite understand where you're coming from. To that, I applaud you.

But then again, don't you think that the reason you have been blessed with such intelligence and over achievements and whatever things are in your resume, is because it is your purpose in life is to be something more other than what you choose to be right now? Don't you think, that maybe, just maybe, you are to use your education to educate those who are less fortunate than yourself?

I maybe wrong.

But still, I hope that you're happy, because thhat's what really matters, anyway.

I mean, hey, it's your life.

PS. Bernadette Sembrano could've done a better job. Did they even read your blog? The TV feature doesn't give what you've been through justice.

Saw your story in Nagmamahal, Kapamilya. Truly, the twists and turns of human life are pretty interesting. I do admire your bravery. Amidst the exodus of Filipinos in search for greener pastures, here you are doing the exact opposite. I just watched the episode of Nagmamahal kapamilya today, I was so touched and inpired by the story you shared to us. I am just a teenager by the way and the only dream that I am holding to is to get rich someday, study hard and follow that dream. But watching your story, and reflecting on it. I asked myself if going to states (or other country because it is my dream to live somewhere but here)will really solve my childish problems. I am an honor student too but not a valdictorian like you, but that was my biggest dream also. I salute you for sacrificing all of that opportunity you have (the dream that I am longing for)just to find the happiness in yourself (which I do not think that I can find even for the rest of my life...)

hi

nakita ko ung Nagmamahal Kapamilya which tells about you din... Alam mo, I am really amazed about your decision.. It was really a big step that kung ako ang nasa katayuan mo, hindi ko siguro magagawa un.. Naisip ko, you are really crazy for doing that, but on the 2nd thought I dont have the right to judge what you had done kc meron ka nman sariling dhilan why you did that and at the end, bilib tlaga ako sayo...!!

if may nag cri-criticize sa yo about what you did, i think you dont need any advice from me (hehehe) bcoz i know na you really stand for what you believe..

saludo po ako sa yo pardzz..
bilib ako sa yo..
keep up the good work..

Hi, there!

I've watched the show, primarily because, yours was a story to look forward to. Usually, some shows would brag to showcase about Pinoys making it big overseas but yours is different.

I may say that I, just like you, who has gone too much at a young age, is still in limbo, searching endlessly for something, I myself do not know. But much of that, I would like to tell you how inspiring you have been to me and to other people. Simplicity of life at times answers the complexity of the world -- The snapshot of your life has proven this.

i bid you all the best of luck as you sojourn to yet, another stage in your life. At the end of your trip, you could say to yourself and to the whole world, you were never an aimless wanderer of the world, after all.

More luck to you and your family.

and as for you , as they commonly say in Tagalog, "Mahabang lakbayin ang tatahakin, subalit darating din sa tamang landasin".

Mabuhay ka!

hey, david!

I salute you man, two thumbs up for you. I always want to hear inspiring stories about life's purpose and journey; I found yours interesting. I don't know but deep inside me something tells I have to emulate you, I mean finding my real essence in other places. Nevertheless, I admire you most for being responsible for the consequences of your decision. Keep praying man, God knows what is best for us.

I am praying for your family especially for your "hija" little girl.

Before, I am trying to find my starfishes to be thrown back to the ocean so that i can make a difference, now, not only starfishes give me inspiration but also COCONUT.

I hope to have a communication with a strong and admirable, simple Filipino, like you.

Ey David!

Watched you over the "Nagmamahal Kapamilya" program. And what can I say? Am bowing my heads for you man.

But honestly, after the segment, aside from being proud, I had some dirty thinking that this is something that's crazy. So that I decided to take a visit of your blogspot. Aside from being convinced, I too envy you David for doing such a humble thing. I envy you for having such a nice resume, for being a worket at NASA. For all you know, i have an account from the NASA site started some 5 years ago. Whilst everyone, including me, wished to go and get that American Dream, you preferred to be a nomad in our beloved country. Hmmm...what am I really thinking? Now that you were on TV, people will be dying to see you and support you all throughout. I hope that what you really wished to see and achieve in this country will befell on you at the right time you expected it to come. Am offering my friendship and nothing more. I am just an astronaut-wanna-be-waiting-for-some-magic, a poor-trying-to-become-rich-being, a single-debt-ridden-trying-to-save-somebody-elses-lives. i'll send you an email. Hope you can check it. Good luck to you bro! and be good always. ciao.

hi david, saw you on TV and was very much impress with what you have gone through. in order to live the life you want, you must be who you are. having more and more of what you don't really want in the first place, will not bring happiness. the life you want, will not come from following someone else's dream, or someone else's idea of the best place to live, or someone else's idea of the best car to drive. true happiness and fulfillment require that you have the COURAGE to be your own person. there's a reason why you want the things you want. it is because you're the person best equipped to achieve them. when you pursue what you truly want from life, then you are fulfilling your own unique set of possibilities, making your own special contribution, creating value as only you can do. naiinggit ako sa iyo. ang GALING mo at INIIDOLO kita. iniisip ko... totoo ka ba talaga...hmmm...

Hello bay! And my world suddenly stopped nung umiyak ka na nga. Alam ko, na alam mo na si God may purpose bakit ka nandito and deeply inside I appreciated and also I thank you for that, for listening and acted to the call. The history repeats itself. I can reflect with your situation, Im not genious like you tol, pero I really followed my heart behind the risk na nagaantay sa akin on my srudies kasi yun ang makakapagpaligaya sa akin. Kasi we live in this world once, at walang sino man na mag judge sa atin simply because ito ang buhay na pinili natin. Sana magkita tayo, hindi man ngayun basta in God's time. Gusto kita talagang makita. wla pa akong account dito sa blooger, pero hope you reply me and I will appreciate it: dodzmt@yahoo.com. Or kung gusto mo makita ang friendster account ko, just view me here: http://www.friendster.com/dodzmt. Keep inspiring other people tol. Idol talaga kita, kuya!

HI!

Im so impressed by your life, your decision to leave your "Buhay America" into a "Simple Life". Im really moved by your story,a man who gave up everything and made his sacrifice just to reach and seek for his real IDENTITY.

Im just wondering on others who keeps on dreaming this American Life (hindi naman masamang mangarap)good for you because you've realized that life does not circulate on money or karangya-an sa buhay although kunti lang naman.

I agree on what you've write in your blog that Mother Nature Nurture us for our survival. The Land has everything, it offers it all more than a big grocery story. It give us every thing necessary for survival like food, medicine, shelter, amusement, and more. Our land is our life and future. By the way, hows your MGA ALAGANG HAYOP, here in the highland where we are living most of us depends on the land for living: farming, raising a farm, poultry, gardening, and small scale minning. We live also in that way and theres no wrong in that, we plant camote, sayote, papaya, and any that could give us food. We have our pig pen, and a little poultry too in our backyard that atleast provide us a little help.

By the way nice site... Till here mahaba ata. hehehehehe

You have an interesting life!

How would you like to visit southern Philippines, specifically Davao City? I would be willing to offer you a place to stay while you are exploring the countryside of Mindanao. Please let me know.

I have just established a foundation there, the Beautiful Heart Foundation, Inc. (http://www.beautifulheart.freewebspace.com) and maybe you can share your time and talent to the less-fortunate people there.

Take care and may God bless!

Sincerely,

your story is tear-jerking; so far the most unique that i have seen. While many filipinos are striving to work abroad, you're there in your little paradise, feeding the chickens, wandering across the fields, admiring the blooming of flowers and swaying of trees. I admire youre sincerity, direction, and focus in life. You're the person everyone looks for. Like one of your commentors said, you are an avatar of Buddha. :-) thanks for enlightening us.

Regards to you and your girl.

Having lived in the UK for nearly 8 years and now moved to America (not by choice, really), I doadmire you for your courage and determination. Not all of us who have experienced the luxuries in life, either in the Philippines or any western country, would be able to pack their bags and leave...with such uncertainty of what waits for them. Life is a gamble and I hope that using your life as a bet would prove to be beneficial in the long run. My friend and I have watched you and we were both into tears, having thought of doing the same as you did...but did not have the guts to do it. Al the luck in this world mate.

Hi David.

I watched the show last night... I am so touched! Your credentials is very impressive at such a very young age... Really WOW! But what was atstake was that you did not enjoyed your youth... you missed the fun in youthful life perhaps because of your concentration in studies...

I just hope you can find your happiness not on your own but through sharing your talent with others. Sometimes you find happiness when you made someone happy!

Goodluck with you!

Hey there... I saw you on tv yesterday (Oct. 21st). I can say that your story is very inspiring, considering that I'm only 14 and that most teenagers probably won't care about other people's lives. Just like you said, most Filipinos go for the American dream. Unlike you, you go for the filipino dream. What you told the whole world in the show makes good sense that if a lot more Filipinos would follow your examples, we could achieve whatever we want in life. I can say that you really are a true Pinoy because of what you did. God bless to you and your family, also to your girlfriend and the baby. Take care...

lorraine said...

Oh, and thank you very much for that inspiring story. :)

opowagarocks said...

OMG! Is this really true? Wow! Kuya, you're an inspiration t ous all! Mabuhay po kayo!

You against the whole world, now that's surprising enough... Even though you are aware that Pinas may as well be not worth it, you still came here any way and look for that dream of yours here. Not a lot of pinoys are like that!

Man, you have a lot of supporters now, we're proud of you here in Las Pinas! You could come here and be treated nicely here at any time you want to. Just say when plan to go here and perhaps our Mayor could set a heroe's welcome for you! God speed and take care especially from those bandits that broke into your home.

We never heard of you saying until when you plan to stay here...

u made me cry...we have the same sentiments..after staying in america for 10 years , i felt my life had no meaning..my life revolved around work , i had lots of money but felt a longing for the happy smiles and nice easy going people im used to..so i went back just last year..im now here in cebu and i consider it the best decision ive done in my life....

WHAT A JOURNEY said...

I watched that thing in Kapamilya, it was a lesson lerned in someway buddy...yeah, you're right all pinoys are aspiring hard to work their way in goin' to US even to the point of sellin' their soul to the devil...i am one of those who really wants to work and experince life in US.....but to keep this short, i never sold my soul to the devil, however your story inspired me tocontinue with my own blog....for now, i have only few in the blog maybee soon!

I can't imagine the pressure u went thru by giving up on what you had back at the states. your message is simple and very sincere... thanks for showing to me that life is not all about wat u achieve based on society's standards. At the end of the day, it is one's individual self that would determine the joys and satisfaction we have in our life. Thank you again for showing to me again the simple pleasures a simple flower can offer. I hope you continue to share your journey in life that others like me can also share the lessons you learn.

Dear Coconuter,
I'm 14 from Darwin, Australia and was moved by your story on Nagmamahal Kapamilya.
I was amazed at how far your academic future was heading! My mum and I were completely dumbfounded! Y

When you moved to the province, in a remote part of the Philippines, I couldn't help myself but ask 'Why?' with your bright future in Texas.

You are truly inspiring.
Its weird how someone like you, who I would have never known ever in my entire life, can change my perspective on life.

I would like to thank you so much for the spark of inspiration your brought to my life. Everything I see now, will be seen in a different way.

I hope you and your family live life to the fullest. Protect those you love and God Bless.

'ey! mr.coconuter! :P

I've seen the show yesterday thru TFC here in cali. And this is the firts time I've seen your blog.Bilib ako sa iyo on giving-up those opportunities na makukuha mo dito sa US (with all that talent)versus the pursuit of your own happiness.

My mom even said, para ka daw siguro si David (uy! same name!:P) Chapelle, who got overwhelmed,(ikaw, sabi mo nga by your studies) and left his $50mil show to "find" himself.Honestly, when I first saw the 1st part of the show, I thought you were NUTS too.But after finishing it, now I understand you.It doesn't mean na marami tayong pera or may malaking bahay ay masaya na tayo.Happiness lies within. And I hope that you will continue to find that missing link in your life.('Tho I know, you've found that special someone, may you still find the peace that you are longing for.)

By the way, we have a place in Bataan, just 20 minutes from Olongapo - my mom (who is vacationing here right now and became a big fan of you) said you are most welcome to drop-by pag uwi nya ulit dyan, probably by feb.

Goodluck to all your adventures!

You take care of yourself.

A friend.

Hey David.

I was moved by your story. I had cried even before the program showed that part when you shed tears in your eyes. You are definitely right. No fame, no fortune, no USA will let you find your place and purpose in this world. It's only YOU and your ROOTS. Thank you for a very inspiring story. I hope and pray that your adventures in life will not be in vain, but will lead you to happiness, contentment, and service for others, especially with your God-given talents, for your fellow Filipinos in your own way, whether small or big it may be. If I may add to your story's lesson, it's in others and in sharing our God-given talents for others that we find ourselves our place and our purpose in this world.

Good luck.

gma and abs-cbn, here's your chance. for sure, whatever show you'll get will be high rated as seen from the traffic on your blog.

well i have nothing to say about it......but if i have something to say, Man! you rock. because not all of the viewers understand why you leave you american fream and live a simple life here in the philippines, but what ever reason why you've done this, Man you touch our hearts. simply there is no place like home.

With your features, you could easily do commercials and billboards here in Manila. Maybe you wanna venture into that?

i was touched by your story, david. i can totally relate to what you are feeling. after living in canada for over 20 years, i finally decided to come home and feel what is like to live in the Philippines again, the place where I was born and raised. i too, is in search for that true happiness. i have done well here as well and i have a huge and close knit family here but they are very supportive of my decision. i am quite worried bcoz im not sure if i will be able to relate to the life there but after seeing your video, it gives me some sort of inspiration. thank you and good luck to you and your family.
