Marvin Sonsona Defeats Lopez for WBO Junior Bantamweight Championship

Perhaps outshining his fellow kababayans (Donaire, Concepcion, etc.) from Pinoy Power 2, 19-year-old "Marvelous" Marvin Sonsona (14-0, 12 KOs) of the Philippines became the youngest Filipino champion in history with his taking of the WBO junior bantamweight championship away from 37-year-old reigning titleholder Jose “Carita” Lopez (39-8-2, 32 KOs) of Puerto Rico via unanimous decision on Friday night at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario. Sonsona scored a knockdown in round four and went on to win by scores of 114-111, 115-110 and 116-109. Lopez was deducted two points in round eight for a low blow.
