Hagimit Falls

hagimit fallsJust a couple kilometers away from the town of Peñaplata on Samal Island is the well-known tourist site Hagimit Falls. In fact, I was told that it has been featured on television by Dyan Castillejo and Marc Nelson in their show Sports Unlimited. The place is essentially a long stream with beautiful cascades of small waterfalls turned into a picnic site with cottages. I heard that it got its name from the plentiful hagimit (ficus minahassae) trees in the area.

Though it was too "touristy" for me, a lot of the locals and Davaoeños enjoy visiting the place, especially on holidays. As expected, there were a number of fees--an entrance fee, a fee to shower and change clothes, a fee to use the bathroom, a fee to use the grill, and a fee if you are going to use a cottage. The water now, as seen in the pictures, is still a clear blue-green. Let's just hope it stays that way.
