The Mountain Village

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

I was quite fortunate to have gotten my digital camera back, and only in a matter of days.  But I was even more fortunate that I was not harmed during the theft, as the thieves were reportedly known in the area for carrying guns.

As I look back, I think it was also around this time when my naivety gradually started to dissolve, and my view of the people around began to worsen drastically.  I would become short-tempered and it would not be uncommon for me to confront and explode on locals whom I thought were trying to fool me or harm me.  To this day, that I write this entry, I am still the same way--pent up with frustrations and a lot of anger from years of ill happenings.

Haven't caught the thieves yet. The clothes are gone, but at least I got the digital camera back. And so the "eye" is back. I took advantage of the short break of no rain and took a trip down to a mountain village. The life in the area seemed hard; I saw people sifting through the polluted and muddy waters. I think they were looking for suso (snails), fish, or frogs. There was also a lot of excavation going on. It seems a lot of work is going into developing the area, which should be good for the locals as people moving in look into buying property. I took a picture in one of the large cement tubes I found at a construction site. I remember when I was a child in the Philippines that I used to play hide-and-seek with other children in similar cement tubes.

Mabuhay!
Good news... with the help of some of the locals, I was able to track down the digital camera and recovered it at a pawnshop in a different barangay. The only thing left to do is capture the thieves (there are reportedly 3 of them) and hopefully be able to get some of my clothing back. New Coconuter photo posts in a couple of days... Stay tuned...

Good luck with your recovery process. I traveled in the Philippines (Surigao del Norte, mostly) with family a few years ago and would like to return someday. I will try to visit your site again and perhaps be able to contribute to your incredible journey.
